Introduction to Networks Metropolitan area network (MAN): A network that connects LANs in a metropolitan area, such as county, town, or city. It handles the bulk of communications across a metropolitan area. Examples: State of Pennsylvania has a MAN connecting diverse state agencies within the state capital.

Introduction to Networks Wide area network (WAN): A network that covers a large geographic area, such as a city, a state, a country or the world. Examples: Internet is the world’s largest WAN.
