Los adjetivos posesivos y las conjugaciones plurales Essential Question: How do I correctly express possession in Spanish using possessive adjectives and use the plural form of verbs? Gramática 3.2

To conjugate regular –AR verbs *VOSOTROS is mostly used in Spain / UDS. is used in Latin America (WE will use UDS. in this class!) Yo -o -amos Nosotros(as) -- we Tú -as -áis Vosotros(as)- You (pl) Él, ella, Usted -a -an Ellos(as) -- they Ustedes – you (pl.)

Example: Hablar – to talk/speak Yo hablo hablamos Nosotros(as) Tú hablas habláis Vosotros(as) Él, ella, usted habla hablan Ellos(as), ustedes

To conjugate regular –ER verbs Yo -o -emos Nosotros(as) Tú -es -éis Vosotros(as) Él, ella, usted -e -en Ellos(as), ustedes

Example: Correr – to run Yo corro corremos Nosotros(as) Tú corres corréis Vosotros(as) Él, ella, usted corre corren Ellos(as), ustedes

To conjugate regular –IR verbs Yo -o -imos Nosotros(as) Tú -es -ís Vosotros(as) Él, ella, usted -e -en Ellos(as), ustedes

Example: Escribir – to write Yo escribo escribimos Nosotros(as) Tú escribes escribís Vosotros(as) Él, ella, usted escribe escriben Ellos(as), ustedes

What are they? Possessive adjectives express ownership of things and people. Por ejemplo: Es mi dinero. (It’s my money.) Ellos son sus maestros. (Those are his teachers.)

Connecting with Prior Knowledge: Like other Spanish adjectives, possessive adjectives always agree in GENDER and sometimes NUMBER with the noun they describe. Ejemplo: las chicas bonitas la mujer bonita

Unlike other Spanish adjectives, however, possessive adjectives go directly before the noun they describe. Es mi gata. (It’s my cat.) Son mis gatas. (They are my cats.)

SINGULAR POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES MI my NUESTRO(A) our TU your VUESTRO(A) your (plural –Spain) SU your (formal) SU your (plural) SU his/her/its SU their

Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective: PRÁCTICA Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective: 1.________ hermano (my) 2. ________ tío (your) 3. ________ tía (your) 4. ________ primo (his) 5. ________ madre (our) 6. ________ abuela (their) mi tu tu su nuestra su

PLURAL POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES MIS my NUESTRO(AS) our TUS your VUESTRO(AS) your (plural –Spain) SUS your (formal) SUS your (plural) SUS his/her/its SUS their

Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective: PRÁCTICA Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective: 1._______ hermanos (my) 2. _______ tíos (your) 3. _______ amigos (your) 4. _______ primos (his) 5. _______ padres (our) 6. _______ abuela (their)*** mis tus tus sus nuestros su

OJO: Nuestro(a) and Vuestro(a) agree in gender AND number with the nouns they describe! Poss. adjs. come directly before the noun; the use of the article is NOT necessary. Ejemplo: Es mi teléfono. Avoid saying: Es mi el teléfono.

How do I clarify between his/her and their? Use: NOUN + de + PERSON   Ejemplo: Es su abuela. OR Es la abuela de Juan. Es la abuela de Anita. Es la abuela de ellos. How do I clarify between his/her and their?

When discussing your family you may also want to use indefinite articles. Por ejemplo: Tengo un hermano. Mi hermano tiene siete años. (I have a brother. My brother is seven years old.) AVOID saying, “Tengo el hermano.” Keep in mind!
