Saber and Conocer- “to know”  Saber: sé sabes sabe sabemos saben Conocer: conozco conoces conoce conocemos conocen

Conocer  Conocer means “to know,” “to meet” or “to be familiar with”  Knowing people (Conocer a _____)  Knowing specific places  Knowing or being familiar with things or ideas  Examples  Yo no conozco a Shakira. I don’t know Shakira.  Quiero conocer a Shakira. I want to MEET Shakira.  ¿Conoces Phoenix? Are you familiar with Phoenix?  Yo conozco muy bien la escuela. I know the school really well.

Saber  Saber means “to know” or “to know how to…  It is used for knowing information…or any other knowing that doesn’t apply to Conocer.  Saber + infinitive verb = knowing how to do something  Examples:  Yo no sé cómo te llamas. I don’t know what your name is.  ¿Sabes hablar español? Do you know how to speak Spanish?  ¿Qué no sabes hacer bien? What don’t you know how to do well?  Sabemos que la clase es fácil. We know that the class is easy.

Extra Information:  Personal “a”….  You say and write the word “a” after the conjugated form of conocer when you know a person.  “como” means “how to” (Cómo…means How?)  “que” means “that” (qué…means What?)

Try it…  Say the following to your group:  (one each)  1. I know how to play…..  2. I know the capital of Arizona…  3. I know that Sponge Bob is yellow.  4. I know of President Obama.

YO-GO verbs  Yo-go verbs are another type of irregular verb.  In the “yo” form, it will end in “-go”  You already know tener…Yo tengo.  These verbs will sometimes be another type of irregular
