IRREGULAR VERBS

Remember how regular verbs are formed? You drop the –ar, -er, or –ir and add the appropriate ending.

The six verbs listed below are irregular. That means they don’t follow the rules you’ve learned. salirto leave ponerto put traerto bring hacerto do, make verto see oírto hear

The first five are irregular only in the first person singular. That means that they DON’T follow the rule for making the yo form of the verb, but they DO follow the rules for all the other persons. salir poner traer hacer ver oír

Here’s how you conjugate salir: *** salgo salimos sales salís sale salen Notice that only the yo form fails to follow the rule. In all the other persons, you follow the rule; that is, you drop off the –ir and add the regular endings: imos -es -ís -e -en

Now let’s do poner: ***pongo ponemos pones ponéis pone ponen You can see that, like salir, it follows the rules; that is, except for the yo form, You drop the –er and add the regular –er endings: emos -es -éis -e -en

And now we’ll add hacer: ***hagohacemos haces hacéis hacehacen salir poner ***salgo salimos***pongo ponemos sales salís pones ponéis sale salen pone ponen

And now traer: ***traigotraemos traes traéis traetraen salir poner hacer ***salgo salimos ***pongo ponemos ***hago hacemos sales salís pones ponéis haces hacéis sale salen pone ponen hace hacen

And, finally, ver: ***veo vemos ves veis ve ven salir poner ***salgo salimos ***pongo ponemos sales salís pones ponéis sale salen pone ponen hacer traer ***hago hacemos ***traigo traemos haces hacéis traes traéis hace hacen trae traen

Now you’re ready for oír. Unlike the other five verbs, it’s irregular in four persons, not just one. You’ll have to memorize it carefully. ***oigooímos ***oyesoís ***oye ***oyen As you can see, only nosotros and vosotros are regular. The other persons are irregular.

Now here are all six verbs. Make sure you understand this presentation and then go to your homework. salir poner ***salgo salimos ***pongo ponemos sales salís pones ponéis sale salen poneponen hacer traer ***hago hacemos ***traigo traemos haces hacéis traes traéis hace hacen trae traen ver oír ***veo vemos ***oigooímos ves veis ***oyesoís ve ven ***oye ***oyen

ASSIGNMENTS Your homework assignment is “Irregular Verbs” under Chaper 4. If you don’t have it in my box in Academic 103 or under my office door by Friday, April 4, you will be counted absent for Wed., April 2. You also have the option of ing your assignments to me, but you’d better do so before Friday, April 4; I will go by the date and time on the , and if your computer makes errors in date and time, you’d better give it a little breathing space. Also, if you make an error and it doesn’t get to me, or it gets to me without the answers, you will be counted absent for Wed., April 2. I will not take your word for it if you say that you sent it. Go to my web site, and look at the homework assignments for chapter 1. You’ll find one that wasn’t there before; it’s called Check- up. Click on it. You must answer all the questions you find there and turn that sheet in with your homework. Again, if you don’t turn the answers in as outlined in the previous paragraph, you will be counted absent for Wed., April 2. If you turn in only one of these assignments, or if you miss any on the second assignment (answering the questions on Check-up), you will be counted absent for Wed., April 2.
