Luke 19:11 - 28 11 While people were listening to Jesus speak, Jesus proceeded to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God would appear there immediately.

12 So Jesus said, “A nobleman went off to a distant country to obtain the kingship for himself and then to return. 13 He called ten of his servants and gave them ten gold coins and told them, ‘Engage in trade with these until I return.’

14 His fellow citizens, however, despised him and sent a delegation after him to announce, ‘We do not want this man to be our king.’ 15 But when he returned after obtaining the kingship, he had the servants called, to whom he had given the money, to learn what they had gained by trading.

16 The first came forward and said, ‘Sir, your gold coin has earned ten additional ones.’ 17 He replied, ‘Well done, good servant! You have been faithful in this very small matter; take charge of ten cities.’ 18 Then the second came and reported, ‘Your gold coin, sir, has earned five more.’

19 And to this servant too he said, ‘You, take charge of five cities.’ 20 Then the other servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your gold coin; I kept it stored away in a handkerchief, 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding person; you take up what you did not lay down and you harvest what you did not plant.'

22 He said to him, ‘With your own words I shall condemn you, you wicked servant. You knew I was a demanding person, taking up what I did not lay down and harvesting what I did not plant; 23 why did you not put my money in a bank? Then on my return I would have collected it with interest.'

24 And to those standing by he said, ‘Take the gold coin from him and give it to the servant who has ten.’ 25 But they said to him, ‘Sir, he has ten gold coins.’ 26 ‘I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

27 Now as for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me.’ ” 28 After Jesus had said this, he proceeded on his journey up to Jerusalem. Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Luke 19:11 - 28 Reflexiónes en Lucas 19:11 - 28 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Nov. 21, 2007 Note that this gospel speaks to us about the Kingdom. So it is what is called a “Kingdom Saying”. It is central to the teachings of Christ. It is about God and his activity in reigning.

Cyril of Alexandria (in Commentary on Luke, Homily 129) reminds us that the nobleman is Christ Jesus, the Son of the Father, journeying to the Father in a “far country” to obtain a kingdom for his Father. He is first and foremost a giver of gifts, for these talents are divine gifts given to the faithful. They were partially given during his ministry, partially at Pentecost, and partially today, for he lives among us.

He gives a variety of love gifts to those who believe in him He gives a variety of love gifts to those who believe in him. Those who deny him are the rebels who throw off the yoke of his scepter, and have even completely denied his kingdom. He faithful are given their Lord’s wealth. They gain some by doing business. They earn the praises due to faithful services, and are considered worthy of eternal honors.

What kind of gifts are we talking about. St What kind of gifts are we talking about? St. Paul says: “For to one is given the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, and to another faith, and to another gifts of healing” (1 Corinthians 12.8). They are also called the charisms, meaning, love gifts. It is God’s love that leads him to give us so much. Set your aim on love (1 Corinthians 14.1).

What about the interest What about the interest? How can we gain interest on the love gifts of God? Origin (Homily on Exodus 13.1) has this to say. “When you hear the Word of God, and you use it and act according to those words that you hear and live according to these words, then you are preparing interest for the Lord.” One day you will hear the Lord say: “Well done, good and faithful servant, you shall have power over ten cities.”

As for the wicked and lazy servant, who was reproved and severely punished, his fault was that he would not put to use what was given him. The “profit” that God expects of us is that we live good lives, lives of holiness. We should be ready to give an account to the Lord every day.

Augustine (Sermon 94) says that when Christ is attacked, defend him Augustine (Sermon 94) says that when Christ is attacked, defend him. Give an answer to those who bellyache and complain. Rebuke blasphemers, but keep yourselves far from any fellowship with them. Preach the Word of God, in season, and out of season. Live the Word of God. Set an example. Be a model, like St. Paul was a model for us.

Do nothing that is unworthy of the Lord Do nothing that is unworthy of the Lord. There are certain things you shall never do. Make up you mind in prayer in the presence of the Lord. Aspire to please him in all things.
