Showing Possession / Relationships In English we use an apostrophe s: (‘s) or (s’) to say that someone owns or possesses something. Ex: Martin is Charlie’s dad. Ex: That is Lola’s ring.

No ‘s en Español In Spanish there are NO apostrophes. You CANNOT say, for example, Jorge’s dog, (using an apostrophe)

Possession with “de” To show possession in Spanish, use the word “de” in front of the name of the person(s) who own the item(s). ‘s = de + owner

De Construction To say that someone owns something, or to express a relationship between two people... The item + de + the owner Use the definite article in front of the possession (the thing possessed)

Ejemplos Jorge’s dog = El perro de Jorge. Literally saying, “The dog of Jorge,”

Ejemplos Miguel’s teacher (the teacher of Miguel) la maestra de Miguel Anita’s house (the house of Anita) la casa de Anita Ana and Pablo’s grandmother (the grandmother of Ana and Pablo) la abuela de Ana y Pablo When translating something with ‘s, simply put de in front of the name.

En contexto Tengo el cuaderno de Felipe. La hermana de Maria es amable. Pedro es el primo de Guadalupe. La hermana de Maria es amable.
