2 The Many Uses of De… Use #1:
DE is used to show possession, ownership or a relationship between two items. Es el libro de Carlos. It’s Carlos’ book. Ellos son los amigos de Ana. They’re Ana’s friends.

3 No Apostrophes! In Spanish, there are no apostrophes!
Instead, the preposition de demonstrates the ownership and possession. Ella es la amiga de Rosalina. She is Rosalina’s friend.

4 What type? Use #2: DE can be used to indicate what type of thing you are describing. Los libros de aventuras Adventure books Las películas de misterio Mystery movies

5 Where Someone is From ¿De dónde eres? Use #3:
DE can be used to say where someone is from. Pepe es de Cuba. Pepe is from Cuba. Yo soy de Guatemala. I am from Guatemala. ¿De dónde eres? Where are you from?

6 Forming a Contraction When the preposition de is followed by the definite article el, they morph into the word del. (Really it forms a contraction) El correo electrónico del profesor es… The teacher’s is …

They say how many years they have versus how old they are.
