Marcos 12:38 - 44 38 En aquel tiempo, enseñaba Jesús a la multitud y le decía: “¡Cuidado con los escribas! Les encanta pasearse con amplios ropajes y recibir reverencias en las calles; 39 buscan los asientos de honor en las sinagogas y los primeros puestos en los banquetes;

Mark 12:38 - 44 38 In the course of his teaching Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, 39 seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets.

40 They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” 41 He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. 44 For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Mark 12:38 - 44 Reflexiones en Marcos 12:38 - 44 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Nov. 11, 2012 Today is the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the readings of the Mass, the Lord is teaching us that generosity is pleasing to him. I wish to address the first reading, which is 1 Kings 17:10-16. Then I will say a few words about the Gospel.

It is worthy of note that the prophet Elijah went to a pagan town called Zarephath, where a widow provided him with all she had left. She had nothing baked; but she did have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in her jug. The prophet encouraged her to be generous.

“Do not be afraid. First, make me a little cake and bring it to me “Do not be afraid. First, make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son.” She did as the prophet requested. Moreover, after that the Lord provided enough for her and her son to eat for a year. Miraculously, the jar of flour did not go empty, or the jug of oil run dry.

“No temas.

Meanwhile the bad King Ahab is persecuting Elijah Meanwhile the bad King Ahab is persecuting Elijah. His country suffered drought for three and half years, and a great famine came over all the land. This incident is recorded in Luke 4:25-26. Jesus cited the good example of the prophet Elijah and the widow of Zarephath, as He was about to be rejected by his own people, the Nazarenes.

There is irony in all of this: the state of affairs was opposite of what it should have been. The People of God were supposed to receive the prophet Elijah, and end in persecuting him. Whereas the poor pagan widow is the one who takes care of him.

Jesus said “No prophet is well received in his own country” (Luke 4:24). He was ultimately to be rejected by his own people. John 1:10-13 “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his Name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh, but of God.”

Therefore, the widow of Zarephath anticipates the pagan world that was to be converted and turn to Christ and receive him as their Savior. Her generosity is now remembered centuries later. It set the criterion by which we measure a generous person. She gave all she had, even though it was very little. She trusted in God, and God rewarded her faith.

Jesus in his day found a religion that was led by the scribes and the Pharisees. They were known for their hypocrisy. Jesus told the people to beware of their empty show of wealth. They loved the places of honor at banquets, accepted greetings in the market, and seats of honor in the synagogues.

Meanwhile they devoured the houses of widows, and covered up by reciting long prayers, to be seen as pious. If religion for us is just empty show, beware. The poor widow in Mark 12:42 pleases the Lord because she generously gave all she had, of her substance. It amounted to two small coins worth a few cents, but she gave it with all her heart.

The example of the early Christians of Acts of the Apostles 2:44-47 comes to mind. “They had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all; as any had need. In addition, day-by-day they attended the temple together, breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Today we apply this in a different way, but in this time of economic recession, we are still called to be generous. From each according to his means, to each according to his need, is the general principle.

St Ignatius Loyola had a beautiful prayer, and I want to share it with you. It is called the Prayer for Generosity. “Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you alone deserve; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labor, and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I am doing your will.”
