There are two verbs in Spanish that mean “to be”: ser and estar There are two verbs in Spanish that mean “to be”: ser and estar. Although they both mean “to be”, you cannot use them interchangeably. There are certain situations where you must use “ser” and other situations where you must use “estar”. Look at these rules: Ser Use when talking about description or origin Estar Use when talking about condition or location

Look at these examples: Juan es de Colombia. Juan is from Colombia. (origin) Juan está enfermo. Juan is sick, (condition) Notice how in the first Spanish sentence a form of the verb “ser” is used, because we are talking about Juan’s origin. In the second sentence a form of “estar” is used, because we are talking about Juan’s condition.

Let’s do some examples. Try to figure out if you need to use a form of the verb “ser” or “estar”. The answer will appear after 10 seconds. Ellos en la clase. están (location) Tú muy alto. eres (description) Yo de Cleveland. soy (origin) Nosotros cansados. estamos (condition)
