Direct Object Pronouns

The direct object in a sentence receives that action of the verb. They answer Whom? or What? about the verb. Nouns used as direct objects can be replaced by pronouns: In English: Do you have the book? Yes, I have it. Direct object pronoun replaces book

In Spanish, the direct object noun is placed AFTER the conjugated verb: ¿Tienes el libro? Do you have the book? (libro comes after tienes) The direct object pronoun is placed directly BEFORE the conjugated verb: Sí, lo tengo. Yes, I have it. (lo replaces el libro as it and comes before tengo.)

Try these! ¿Comes un sándwich? Sí, __________________________ ¿Llevas la falda nueva? Sí, ________________________________ ¿Haces la tarea? No, no _______________________________

Try these! ¿Comes un sándwich? Sí, _lo como_ ¿Llevas la falda nueva? Sí, _la llevo___ ¿Haces la tarea? No, no __lo hago__

When an infinitive (not conjugated) follows the conjugated verb, you can place the direct object pronoun either: BEFORE the conjugated verb: Quiero comprar la torta = La quiero comprar. OR ATTACHED to the infinitive: Quiero comprar la torta = Quiero comprarla.

Ex: Quiero sacar las fotos. Las quiero sacar OR Quiero sacarlas. SAME THING You can also use personal pronouns for people: They buy a soda for me. Me compran un refresco. I am looking for you. Te estoy buscando.

Try These! Quiero tomar un refresco. ________________________________ ______ OR ________________________________ _______

Try These! Quiero tomar un refresco. Lo quiero tomar OR Quiero tomarlo

Try These! Puedo hacer la tarea. ________________________________ ______ OR ________________________________ _______

Try These! Puedo hacer la tarea. Lo puedo hacer OR Puedo hacerlo

Quiero comprar unos zapatos. __________________________________ _ OR __________________________________ ___

Quiero comprar unos zapatos. Los quiero comprar OR Quiero comprarlos.

Singular Direct Object Pronouns Plural Direct Object Pronouns Me (to/for me) Te (to/for you) Lo (you formal, him, it) La (you formal, her, it) Nos (to/for us) Los (to/for all of you, them masc) Las (to/for all of you, them fem)

Try These! For the following questions, say what each person buys. Ex: Roberto: la pluma = Roberto la compra. 1.Diana: los patines _______________ 2.Nacho: la raqueta _______________ 3.Patricio: las gorras _______________

If you want to use a person as a direct object, you still use the same pronouns: Diana me conoce = Diana knows me. Remember the personal A? The person receives the action. I see you: YOU receive the action. Te veo.

Try these! 1.I invite you. ___________________ 2.Juanito speaks to us. ___________________________ 3. Your father sees you. ______________________________ 4. Your friends dont know me! _______________________________
