2 What is a direct object? The object that directly receives the action of the verb is called the direct object. Bill hit the ball. "Ball" receives the action of the verb "hit." Sherry reads the book. "Book" receives the action of the verb "reads." The direct object can also be a person. Sherry hit Bill. “Bill” receives the action of the verb “hit.”

3 The direct object answers the question "what. " or "whom
The direct object answers the question "what?" or "whom?" with regard to what the subject of the sentence is doing. Bill hit the ball. Bill hit what? Sherry hit Bill. Sherry hit whom?

4 Often, it is desirable to replace the name of the direct object with a pronoun.
Paul bought the flowers. He took the flowers home and gave the flowers to his wife. Paul bought the flowers. He took them home and gave them to his wife.

5 Here are the direct object pronouns in Spanish:
Me D.O. = me Nos D.O. = us Te D.O. = you Os D.O. = you all (Sp.) Lo/La D.O. = it, him, her, you (f) Los/Las D.O. = them, you all

6 Direct Object Pronoun Placement
Direct Object Pronouns always come directly BEFORE the conjugated verb in the sentence. Yo preparo las mesas. = Yo las preparo. NOT Yo preparo LAS. Ellos no llaman a Maria. = Ellos no la llaman. NOT Ellos no llaman LA.

7 Direct Object Pronouns
I want a computer. = Yo quiero una computadora. Yo la quiero. Do you know her? = ¿Tú conoces a ella? = ¿Tú la conoces? He has the books. = El tiene los libros. = El los tiene. Maria has a new car. = Maria tiene carro nuevo. = Maria lo tiene. Do we see you? = ¿Nosotros vemos a tí? = ¿Nosotros te vemos?
