Regular and Irregular Verbs The verbs we have looked at so far are called regular verbs because they follow a regular pattern. Verbs that do not follow the regular pattern are called irregular verbs.

The verb estar The verb estar (to be) is an irregular verb. The yo form doesn’t follow the regular pattern for –ar verbs. The tú, Ud./él/ella, and Uds./ellos/ellas forms require accent marks. Estar is used to talk about: How someone feels (ex: ¿Cómo estás?) Where someone or something is located (ex: ¿Dónde está el lápiz?)
