YOU USE THE PRETERITE TO EXPRESS ACTIONS THAT BEGAN AND ENDED AT A DEFINITE TIME IN THE PAST. The preterite tense is used with following words or phrases: Ayer – yesterday Anoche – last night Ayer por la tarde – yesterday in the afternoon Ayer por la mañana – yesterday in the morning El año pasado – last year La semana pasada – last week

The preterite of regular –ar verbs is formed by dropping the infinitive ending –ar and adding the appropriate endings to the stem. IR Y SER EN EL PRETÉRITO The verbs ir and ser are irregular in the preterite tense. They have identical forms.
