2 Preterite of –ar verbs 1. Use the preterite tense to talk about what happened or what someone did at a specific point in the past. To form the –ar verbs, like comprar, add these endings to the verb’s stem.

4 comprar = to buy compré compramos compraste comprasteis compraron
Yo Nosotros Tú Vosotros Él Ella Ud. Ellos Ellas Uds. compré compramos compraste comprasteis compraron compró

5 Preterite of –ar verbs 2. Note that, in the preterite, the nosotros form of the –ar verbs looks exactly like the present tense form. You will have to use the context to decide whether the speaker is talking about the present or the past. Isa y yo gastamos mucho ayer.

6 Preterite of –ar verbs The stem-changing –ar verbs do not have stem changes in the preterite. Encontré una camisa bonita y la compré. I found a pretty shirt and I bought it.

7 -car, -gar, -zar verbs In the yo form only make the following changes.
