2 Times the preterite is used: In español there are 2 past tenses = the Preterite and the Imperfect 3 times to use the preterite: 1) action that happened once 2) completed past action 3) action occurred in a definite period of time

3 Words that would indicate a “definite period of time” in the past: Anoche Ayer Anteayer La semana pasada El año pasado El mes pasado a la/las (time) Last night Yesterday Day before yesterday Last week Last year Last month At (time)

4 Verbos –ar (regular) Yo -é Tú -aste Él Ella-ó Ud. Nosotros – amos ---------- Ellos Ellas -aron Uds. - Ar verbs do not stem change in the Preterite Tense

5 Ejemplos I needed- Yo necesité You sang- Tú cantaste He arrived- Él llegó We played- (sport) Nosotros jugamos We played- (music) Nosotros tocamos You (for/pl) wore- Uds. llevaron

6 -car (practicar, buscar, pescar, etc.) Any verb that ends in –car is irregular in the 1 st person singular only Yo busqué (not buscé) Tú buscaste Él/Ella/Ud. buscó Nosotros buscamos Ellos/Ellas/Uds. buscaron WHY??? = ¡ pronunciación !

7 -gar (llegar, jugar, pagar, etc.) Any verb that ends in –gar is irregular in the 1 st person singular only Yo llegué (not llegé) Tú llegaste Él/Ella/Ud. llegó Nosotros llegamos Ellos/Ellas/Uds. llegaron

8 -zar (empezar, almorzar, etc.) Any verb that ends in –zar is irregular in the 1 st person singular only Yo comencé (not comenzé, not comiencé) Tú comezaste Él/Ella/Ud. comenzó Nosotros comenzamos Ellos/Ellas/Uds. comenzaron
