What is a gerund? Also known as present participle Not the equivalent to the English gerund because Spanish gerund cannot be used as a noun as in English. English gerund can be translated into Spanish as an infinitive. In Spanish, the word always ends in –ndo.

-ar--->ando -er --->iendo -ir --->iendo Forms To form the gerund, remove the infinitive ending and add –ando for –ar verbs, and –iendo for –er and –ir verbs. -ar--->ando -er --->iendo -ir --->iendo caminar > caminando volver > volviendo abrir > abriendo

Special cases leer > leyendo caer > cayendo Verbs of the second and third conjugations where the stem of the word ends in a vowel, change the ending –iendo to –yendo. leer > leyendo caer > cayendo

English Verb Spanish Verb Spanish Gerund To fall caer cayendo to believe creer creyendo to flee huir huyendo to go ir yendo to influence influir influyendo to hear oír oyendo to bring traer trayendo to read leer leyendo to follow seguir siguiendo

The gerund for ir is yendo. Third conjugatio verbs with stem changes: o>ue>u dormir, duermo, durmió dormir > durmiendo; morir > muriendo e>ie>I sentir, siento, sintiósentir > sintiendo e>i>I pedir, pido, pidió pedir > pidiendo

Gerund verbs of motion seguir/continuar Use seguir or continuar to express the idea “to continue” (to do something) or “to keep on (doing something)”. Sigo teniendo problemas con mi computadora. Continúan haciendo las mismas preguntas.

Let’s practice!
