How to use “Gustar”

The verb gustar (to be pleasing) is used to say one likes an object or an action. This verb works differently than other verbs. To use it, you need something from each of the columns filled out in your notes. What you use, depends on the elements of the thought that you are trying to express.

Who likes/loves the object or action? Agreeing Form of Gustar What is liked or loved? A mí   gusta the + singular noun infinitive (-ar, -er, -ir) A ti A Ud. A él/ella gustan the + plural noun A nosotros A Uds. A ellos/as me te le le nos les les

I like coffee. Me gusta el café. He loves to run. Le gusta correr. We like apples. Nos gustan las manzanas.

2. If you want to emphasize or clarify who the person is that likes/loves the action, you must do that by adding an a phrase: Carlos likes coffee. A Carlos le gusta el café. María and Paco love to read. A María y a Paco les gusta leer.
