Conditional Indicative tense

I. Conditional Indicative The conditional tense of regular verbs is formed by adding the following endings to the infinitive: ía ías íamos íais ían infinitive +

II. Irregular Conditional Stems tener tendr- salir saldr- venir vendr- valer valdr- poner pondr- poder podr- querer querr- saber sabr- caber cabr- haber habr- decir dir- hacer har- *Remember compound verbs (detener, oponer) have the same irregular forms*

II. Conditional Indicative (continued) Llamaría a Paco si supiera su número. I would call Paco if I knew his number. Me gustaría verlos pronto. I would like to see them soon. ¿Podría mostrármelos? Could you show them to me? Te habría dicho el secreto pero no podía. I would have told you the secret but I couldn’t.

III. Uses of the Conditional A. The conditional is used as in English to express a potential past action if certain conditions were to occur– in English the words would & could ¿Cuándo haríamos el proyecto? When would we do the project? Te habría llamado pero llegué tarde I would have called you but I arrived late.

III. Uses of the Conditional (continued) B. The conditional is used to express wonderment or probability in the past (I wonder, probably, must have, could have, etc.) ¿Qué hora sería cuando salió? I wonder what time it was when he left. Silvia iría a Ixtapa si ganara la lotería. Silvia would probably go to Ixtapa if she were to win the lottery.

IV. Imperfect & Conditional The conditional (an action under certain conditions) can be expressed with would: ¿Visitarías a tus primos si tuvieras tiempo? Would you visit your cousins if you had time? The imperfect (a habitual action) can be expressed with would: ¿Visitabas a tus primos cuando tenías tiempo? Would you visit your cousins when you had time?

Imperfect vs Conditional Visitaba I would visit (used to) Visitaría I would visit (if a condition existed) Comía I would eat (used to) Comería I would eat (if a condition existed)
