Lesson 9 Grammar The Conditional Tense I would…

The conditional tense is formed from the infinitive of the verbar, -er, -ir, it doesnt matter Comer YoComeríaNosotrosComeríamos TúTúComeríasVosotrosComeríais Él Ella Ud. Comería Ellos Ellas Uds. Comerían

Of course, there are always irregular verbs: Saber Poder Tener Hacer Haber Venir Decir Poner Salir Querer Valer Caber Sabr- Podr- Tendr- Har- Habr- Vendr- Dir- Pondr- Saldr- Querr- Vald- Cabr- ía ías ía íamos íais ían

Examples: Yo no haría eso… I wouldnt do that… Sr. Burroughs nunca diría mentiras. Mr. Burroughs would never tell lies. Ellos no fumarían. They wouldnt smoke. Te ayudaría, pero tengo que lavarme el pelo. I would help you, but I have to wash my hair.

Using the conditional to refer to the past can also express the idea of would… in the past. El maestro dijo que no habría examen. The teacher said that there wouldnt be a test. Creíamos que los Kings ganarían We believed that the Kings would win. Mis padres sabían que no me casaría con mi novio. My parents knew that I wouldnt marry my boyfriend.

Last, but not least, we can use the conditional tense to make polite requests. ¿Me acompañarías al baile? Would you accompany me to the dance? Señor, ¿me daría una A en la clase? Wouldst thou give me an A in the class? ¿Nos comprarían una pizza? Would yall buy us a pizza?
