With your 3 o`clock partner, try to figure out what they are saying and what the DO and/or IO are in the sentences.

Worksheet part B: Nosotros le pedimos a Mark la hamburguesa. Ellos me quieren dar el regalo. Ellos quieren darme el regalo. We prefer to give the money to the waiter now. Ustedes le están diciendo la verdad a ella. Ustedes están diciéndole la verdad a ella. Ustedes le dicen la verdad a ella. I want to give you (s. inf.) the test tomorrow.

DOP + IOP practice (on their own): They want them (the apples). Ellos las quieren. We need you on our team. Nosotros te necesitamos en nuestro equipo. Your mom buys your brother a hamburger. Tu madre le compra una hamburguesa a tu hermano. I need to read the menu to Taylor. Yo necesito leerle el menú a Taylor. Yo le necesito leer el menú a Taylor.

What if I have a DOP and an IOP in the same sentence?

Where do I put them?

Location of DOP and IOP: Follow the same rules as you learned with them on their own: One verb: DOP and IOP go in front of the conjugated verb Two verbs working together: DOP and IOP can either go before the conjugated verb or on the end of the second verb/present participle. NOTE: If you have both DOP and IOP in the sentence together they MUST stick together – you cannot put one before the conjugated verb and one at the end of the second verb.

What about word order?

R.I.D. You don’t need to worry about Reflexive pronouns quite yet, but if you have more than one pronoun of these pronouns working in a sentence you follow the R.I.D order for the pronouns: Reflexive, Indirect, Direct Examples: Ustedes me lo dan. Nosotros te lo decimos. Ellos quieren decírmelo. Ustedes están diciéndomelo. Note: If you have 2 pronouns added to the end of an infinitive or present participle you need to add an accent. For infinitives it goes on the vowel in the ending and for present participles it goes on the a of –ando or e of –iendo.

Markerboards! I tell you (s. inf.) it (the truth). Yo te la digo. We give y’all (informal) them. Nosotros os los damos. They are giving us them. Ellos están dándonoslos. Ellos nos los están dando. You (s. inf.) want to give it (the food) to me. Tú quieres dármela. Tú me la quieres dar.

Anything else I need to worry about?

“La La Rule” When both pronouns begin with the letter “L” you need to switch the first pronoun to “se” Examples: You give her it (the ball) Tú le la das.  Tú se la das. We give them it (the book): Nosotros les lo damos  Nosotros se lo damos. 

Markerboards: I say it to them. You all (formal) give it to them. Yo les lo digo.  Yo se lo digo(a ellos). You all (formal) give it to them. Ustedes les lo dan.  Ustedes se lo dan (a ellos). We want to give it to her. Nosotros le lo queremos dar.  Nosotros se lo queremos dar (a ella). Nosotros queremos dárlelo.  Nosotros quermos dárselo (a ella).

DOP + IOP practice: I buy it. They want to buy it for you. Yo lo compro. They want to buy it for you. Ellos quieren comprártelo. Ellos te lo quieren comprar. We are buying the sugar for her. Nosotros estamos comprándole el azúcar (a ella). Nosotros le estamos comprando el azúcar (a ella).
