Commands with Objects:
5
Overview: What are the different kinds of object pronouns we might have to worry about? Direct Object Pronouns: Who? What? receives the action of the verb. Indirect Object Pronouns: To whom? For whom? receives the direct object Reflexive Pronouns: Work with reflexive verbs typically when the recipient of the action is the same person as the subject.
6
Overview: What rules have we learned that go with having more than one object in a phrase? RID: The order of pronouns is Reflexive, Indirect, Direct La La: If you have two pronouns in a row starting with “L” you need to change the first one to “se” The jobs of pronouns and the rules above will work the same in commands as in a normal sentence.
7
Where do we put the pronouns?
Affirmative commands: Pronoun is attached to the end of the command. Ejemplo: Hazlo tú. You do it. Negative commands: Pronoun goes before the command. Ejemplo: No te levantes. Don’t get up.
8
Accents: Affirmative commands: Because you are adding pronouns to the end of the word you could mess up the rules of pronunciation with the word. For that reason:
9
Accents: Ejemplos: Dímelo. Tell me it. ¡Vete! Leave!
If the command is one syllable: You only need to add an accent if there are two pronouns added. Ejemplos: Dímelo. Tell me it. ¡Vete! Leave! If the command has two syllables or more: You ALWAYS add an accent where the normal stress of the word is (second to last syllable of the command) if there is a pronoun added. Ejemplos: Cómpramelos. Buy me them. ¡Despiértate! Wake up!
10
Práctica: Tell me it. Don`t tell them it! Wake up! Don`t fall asleep!
Dímelo. ¡No se lo digas a ellos! Wake up! Don`t fall asleep! ¡Despiértate! ¡No te duermas! Order me the soup. Don`t order me the salad. Pídeme la sopa. No me pidas la ensalada.
