Quick review Present Progressive: “ing” Happening RIGHT NOW Estar + PP (present participle) Regular PP: -AR verbs: remove ending and add –ando -ER/-IR verbs: remove ending and add -iendo

Stem changing verbs: Remember that –ar and –er ending stem changing verbs DO NOT have a stem change when forming a PP. -IR verb ending stem changing verbs DO have a change in the PP. Examples of this kind of verb: Dormir (o:ue) Servir (e:i) Preferir (e:ie)

-IR stem changers If it is an o:ue stem changer ending in -ir: The change is o:u in the PP Dormir  durmiendo If it is an e:ie or e:i stem changer ending in –ir: The change is e:i in the PP Servir  sirviendo Preferir  Prefiriendo

Son las tres: With your partner, translate the following sentences. I am serving. servir(e:i) Yo estoy sirviendo. He is sleeping. Dormir (o:ue) Él está durmiendo. They are dying. Morir (o:ue) Ellos están muriendo. We are saying. Decir (e:i) Nosotros estamos diciendo. You (s. inf.) are preferring. Preferir (e:ie) Tú estás prefiriendo.

Irregular Present Participles Some verbs need spelling changes so that they are spelled the same way they are pronounced as a present participle (orthographic changes)

Irregular Present Participles: Creer  creyendo Ir  yendo Oír  oyendo Traer  trayendo Leer  leyendo Guess how the other three will be spelled: Caer  cayendo Huir  huyendo Influir  influyendo Note that Seguir does NOT follow this pattern – it just works like a normal stem changing type of present participle.
