2 When you want to say something is happening RIGHT NOW you use the present progressive tense.

3 In English you would use the verb “to be” followed by a second verb ending in “ing”

4 Paco está lavando los platos.
Paco is washing the dishes. Dora está cocinando. Dora is cooking. La familia está comiendo afuera. The family is eating outside.

5 *BE CAREFUL! In English you can use the present progressive to talk about the future using the verb
“to go” with a second verb ending in “ing”. Example We are going fishing. You CAN NOT use the present progressive in this way to talk about the future in Spanish.

To form the Present progressive you MUST use the present tense forms of the verb ESTAR with the correct present participle. The present participle is formed by dropping the ending off the infinitive and adding “ando” for “AR” verbs, and “iendo for “ER” and “IR” verbs. lav ar ando Estoy com iendo er viv ir iendo

When the STEM of an “ER” or “IR” verb ENDS in a VOWEL change the “iendo” to “yendo”. le er yendo o yendo ír cre er yendo

Here are the regular conjugations for AR, ER and IR verbs El Presente Progresivo hablando (Yo) Estoy comiendo escribiendo (Nosotros) hablando Estámos comiendo (Tú) Estás comiendo (Vosotros) hablando Estáis comiendo (Él) Está comiendo (Ella) escribiendo (Ellos/Ellas) hablando Están comiendo (Ud.) Está comiendo (Ustedes) hablando

9 Some verbs have an irregular change in the stem.
From e to i From o to u venir → viniendo dormir → durmiendo morir → muriendo sentir → sintiendo decir → diciendo
