gustar with infinitives

WHAT IS AN INFINITIVE? An infinitive is the basic form of a verb, a word that expresses action or a state of being.

En inglés In English, infinitives do not have any special endings, but they almost always have the word to in front of them. Examples: to speak,  to run,  to write In Spanish, infinitives always end in -ar,-er, or –ir: hablar  correr   escribir

An infinitive tells the meaning of the verb without naming any subject or tense. There are three kinds of infinitives in Spanish: those ending in -ar, those ending in -er, and those ending in -ir. -ar infinitives -er infinitives -ir infinitives cantar to sing comer to eat escribir to write

Me gusta la música. I like music. Me gusta cantar. I like to sing. Just like nouns, infinitives can be used after a verb like gustar to say what you and others like to do. Me gusta la música. I like music. Me gusta cantar. I like to sing.

Always use gusta (not gustan) with infinitives. Me gustan los deportes. I like sports.  Me gusta jugar al tenis. I like to play tennis.

Gustar + infinitives Me gusta= I like Te gusta = You (informal/singular) Le gusta=You (formal/singular),He/She Nos gusta=We like Os gusta=You all (informal/plural) Les gusta=You all (formal/plural), They

For example: I like to talk= Me gusta hablar You like to talk= Te gusta hablar You (informal/singular) like; He/She likes to talk= Le gusta hablar. We like to talk= Nos gusta hablar You all (informal) like to talk= Os gusta hablar You all (formal); They like to talk= Les gusta hablar

When you want to really emphasize or identify the person that you are talking about, add a + noun/pronoun A Sonia le gusta correr=Sonia likes to run. A ella le gusta correr=She likes to run.

Prounouns that follow the personal a: A mi me gusta cantar. A ti te gusta leer revistas. A él/ella le gusta tocar el piano. A usted le gusta pasar tiempo con amigos. A nosotros nos gusta jugar videojuegos. A vosotros os gusta escribir cuentos. A ellos/ellas les gusta nadar. A ustedes les gusta dibujar en los pupitres. *The nosotros and vosotros have feminine forms! Use nosotras and vosotras when talking about only females.

Translate the following to English. Use page 46 for vocab: A mi me gusta cantar. _________________________________________________________________ 2. A ti te gusta leer revistas. 3. A él le gusta tocar el piano. 5. A ella le gusta montar en monopatín. 4. A Hector le gusta pasar tiempo con amigos. 5. A nosotros nos gusta jugar videojuegos 6.
