Preterite = An action that happened in the past. The action began and ended at a definite time in the past In English it is usually used with an –ed ending ex: I started Spanish class in August She played video games yesterday We went to the beach on Saturday

Preterite –ar endings -amos -é -aste -ó -aron Drop the –ar from the verb and replace with the following: yo = nosotros = tú = Ud. = Uds. = (él, ella) (ellos, ellas) -amos -é -aste -ó -aron Notice there are accents ONLY in the yo & ud. forms

-car, -gar, -zar -car= qué -zar= cé -gar=gué Verbs that end in –car, -gar, -zar have a spelling change in the yo form in the preterite. -car= qué -zar= cé -gar=gué
