Superlatives

We know how to say: tall – alto taller- more tall más alto The Superlative We know how to say: tall – alto taller- more tall más alto tallest – the most tall el/la más alto(a)

más menos adj (noun) el la los (de) las the tallest boy The Formula el la los las más menos adj (noun) (de) the tallest boy the boy most tall the tallest  the most tall

The article (el, la, los, las) and adjective will always agree in gender and number with the noun being described. the tallest student the student most tall el estudiante más alto the tallest (el más alto)

Notice how “de” is used instead of “en” when using the superlative. Paco es el estudiante más alto de la clase. Paco is the tallest student in the class.

Chela es la más alta de su familia. Chela is the tallest in her family. Chela es la (chica) más alta de su familia. Chela is the tallest girl

mejor(es) (bueno/bien) peor(es) (malo/mal) mayor(es) (viejo) Irregulars There are 4 irregulars: mejor(es) (bueno/bien) peor(es) (malo/mal) mayor(es) (viejo) menor(es) (joven) However, they have two different formations.

“mejor” and “peor” come b4 the noun el la los las mejor(es) peor(es) (noun) (de) el mejor gato the best cat el peor perro the worst dog

“mayor/menor” after the noun el la los las mayor(es) menor(es) (noun) (de) la persona mayor the oldest person los chicos menores the youngest boys

Summary: mejor(es) and peor(es) come in front of the noun mayor(es) and menor(es) come after the noun You do NOT use más/menos with irregulars

Summary: You don’t always have to have a noun in the sentence. You must have “the” You must have agreement

Summary: If you want to say “in” you must use “de.” You will NEVER use “que” or compare to specific people

Remember: mayor and menor are only used with people the oldest girl la chica mayor the oldest book el libro más viejo
