Preterite vrs Imperfect Imperfect tense- What was happening? Used to talk about what you used to do or what you were like in the past. Used to talk about repeated actions in the past. In English, such actions are usually expressed by the construction was (were) + ….ing

Preterite The Preterite is like using a camera. It describes what happened at a SPECIFIC POINT IN TIME.

Imperfect The Imperfect is like using a movie camera or video camera. It shows pictures of what was happening, what was going on in in the past.

Uses of the Imperfect The Imperfect tense is also used to talk about what you were like and what you used to do in the past. Yo era bonita y jugaba con mi muñeca.

Imperfect Tense Remember that the imperfect tense is used to describe past actions without any indication of their beginning or end.

To form the imperfect of –ar verbs you drop the endings and add: nosotros -aba yo -ábamos -abas tú Uds. Ud. -aba -aban él ellos ellas ella

caminar (to walk) caminaba caminábamos nosotros yo caminabas tú él Ud. Uds. él ellos caminaba caminaban ella ellas

To form the imperfect of –er, -ir verbs you drop the endings and add: nosotros -ía yo -íamos -ías tú Uds. Ud. -ía -ían él ellos ellas ella

COMER (to eat) nosotros yo comía comíamos tú comías Ud. Uds. comían él ellos comía ella ellas

VIVIR (to live) nosotros yo vivía vivíamos tú vivías Ud. Uds. vivían él ellos vivía ella ellas

The verb VER (to see) is irregular in the imperfect only because the endings are added to the stem VE-

Imperfect HABER is a special verb because it has only one form. You already know the present-tense form, hay (“there is/are”).
