INFORMACIÓN IMPORTANTE The verb tener (to have) is frequently used in Spanish. Most of the forms of the verb are irregular: you will need to learn each of them. TENER is a stem-changing yo-go verb.

TENER tengo tenemos tienes tenéis tiene tienen

The endings are the same as those of regular –er verbs, except for the yo form, which is irregular: tengo.

In the tú, usted, and ustedes forms, the e of the stem changes to ie. tenestienes tenetiene tenentienen

The nosotros and vosotros forms are the only ones which are regular. tenemos tenéis

Sentimiento: to be hungry To express HUNGER in Spanish, the verb “to be” is not used. In Spanish you say that someone HAS HUNGER. tener + hambre

Are you (formal) hungry? ¿Tiene Ud. hambre?

Sentimiento: to be thirsty To express THIRST in Spanish, the verb “to be” is not used. In Spanish you say that someone HAS THIRST. tener + sed

Y’all aren’t thirsty. No tenéis sed.

Sentimiento: to be warm To express WARMTH (in relationship to a person) in Spanish, the verb “to be” is not used. In Spanish you say that someone HAS WARMTH. tener + calor

I am always warm in this store. Siempre (yo) tengo calor en esta tienda.

Sentimiento: to be cold To express COLD (in relationship to a person) in Spanish, the verb “to be” is not used. In Spanish you say that someone HAS CHILL. tener + frío

When you are outside, you are always cold. Cuando estás afuera, siempre tienes frío.

Obligación: to have to… To express that someone HAS TO do something, use the expression: tener que + infinitivo
