3 Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.
The verb tener We’ve learned to use tener to express possession and to say what we have to do. Tengo muchos libros. I have a lot of books. Tengo que irme. I have to go. There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿Tienes sed? Are you thirsty? Tengo frío. I’m cold. Tenemos prisa. We’re in a hurry. Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.

4 Yo tengo diecinueve años.
Tener años ¿Cuántos años tienes? Yo tengo diecinueve años.

5 Tener calor ¡Uf! ¡Tengo mucho calor!

6 Ana y su hermana tienen hambre.

Mucho or mucha, depending on the gender of the noun they modify, are used as intensifiers with the tener expressions. tener calor (m.) Tengo mucho calor. tener cuidado (m.) El doctor tiene mucho cuidado. tener frío (m.) Alicia tiene mucho frío. tener miedo (m.) Juan tiene mucho miedo. tener sueño (m.) Papá tiene mucho sueño. tener hambre (f.)
