Gustar Expressing Likes and Dislikes Part 1: Indirect Object Pronouns and Reinforcers

A ver.. ¿Qué ya saben del verbo GUSTAR? ¿Qué necesitan aprender para poder comunicar de los gustos?

¿Están listos? Objetivo Al final de esta lección, vas a … …poder comunicar de tus gustos y los gustos de otros. ¿Están listos?

Objetivo You will need: Notebook paper for notes One laptop Board, marker and eraser (one per GROUP)

Gustar: to please Me gusta is often translated as “I like.” Me gusta ver la tele. Actually, the verb gustar does not translate well into English. EJEMPLO: “Me gusta comer la pizza.” In English, we say, “I like to eat pizza” OR “I like eating pizza.” But the meaning is really closer to: Eating pizza pleases me. Eating pizza is pleasing to me. I am pleased by eating pizza.

Información Importante As you can see, gustar is not like other –AR verbs because it has a backward construction. Me gusta comer la pizza. Eating pizza is pleasing to me. We use indirect object pronouns instead of subject pronouns to reflect who “likes” something. What are indirect object pronouns? me (to/for me) nos (to/for us) te (to/for you) os (to/for you all) le (to/for you) (to/for him) (to/for her) (to/for it) les (to/for you all) (to/for them)

Practicamos con IOPs Me gusta leer. Te gusta leer. Le gusta leer. Nos gusta leer. Os gusta leer. Les gusta leer. “I like to read.” “You (inf) like to read.” “He/She likes to read.” “You (form) like to read.” “We like to read.” “Y’all like to read.” “They like to read.”

PTI (Para tu información) indirect object pronoun The first word of the sentence (the ___________________) changes based on the person that likes something. You don’t see any _________________ in the sentences. (yo, ella) The form of verb __________ does not change because the “leer” doesn’t change. We often use quotation marks in the translation because ______________ subject pronouns gustar it doesn’t literally translate.

Practicamos 1-IOP Escribe en español. She likes to study. We like to eat. You like to learn Spanish. They like to skate. Y’all like (Spain) to run You (formal) like to share lunch with your favorite students.

Practicamos 1-IOP Respuestas Le gusta estudiar. Nos gusta comer. Te gusta aprender el español. Les gusta patinar. Os gusta correr. Le gusta compartir el almuerzo con sus estudiantes favoritos.

Reinforcers What does “Le gusta escribir cuentos” mean in English? It has 3 different meanings. He likes to study. She likes to study. You (formal) like to study. So how do I know what it means? When you want to identify or emphasize the person that you are talking about, you can add ________________________ to the sentence The sentence formula is (REINFORCER) + IOP + GUSTAR + “THING/ACTION” . A + subject pronoun/name

Reinforcers A mí ___________ me gusta leer. ___________ te gusta leer. ___________ le gusta leer. ___________nos gusta leer. ___________os gusta leer. ___________les gusta leer. A ti A usted A él A ella A nosotros A vosotros A ustedes A ellos A ellas

Repaso de reinforcers mí ti The first and second person singular are irregular. You have to say “A ____” and “A ____” instead of using the subject pronouns “yo” and “tú”. _____ has an accent in order to differentiate between “my” and “me” If your reinforcer has multiple subjects joined by “y”, you must use “____” with each one. EJEMPLO: ________ nos gusta ir de vacaciones. ________ les gusta jugar videojuegos. a A Elena y a mí A Juan y a Lola

Practicamos 2 Escribe en español using REINFORCERS. 1. Jesus and I like to share lunch. A Jesus y a mí nos gusta compartir el almuerzo. 2. Kelly & Macy don’t like to do homework. A Kelly y a Macy no les gusta hacer la tarea. Gabriella, do you like to drink milk? Gabriella, ¿A ti te gusta beber leche?

Practicamos 3 Rewrite these sentences to reflect that the subject likes to do the following activities. Be sure to use a REINFORCER if necessary. 1. Yo hablo por teléfono. 2. Karin corre cada día. 3. Emma y Alexandra juegan al futbol. 4. ¿Ves televisión por la noche? 5. Ustedes responden a las preguntas. 6. No salgo con mi familia. 7. ¿Quién aprende español?

Practicamos 3 Rewrite these sentences to reflect that the subject likes to do the following activities. 1. (A mí) Me gusta hablar por teléfono. 2. A Karin le gusta correr. 3. A Emma y a Alexandra les gusta jugar al fútbol. 4. ¿(A ti) te gusta ver televisión por la noche? 5. A ustedes les gusta responder a las preguntas. 6. (A mí) no me gusta salir con mi familia. 7. ¿A quién le gusta aprender español?

Ahora ¿Puedes… comunicar de tus gustos y los gustos de otros?
