Mt of Beatitudes and Sea of Galilee to southeast The Beatitudes “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Shepherd with flock in Negev riverbed Sheep: Description For centuries sheep have been an important part of life in Israel, providing the local inhabitants with wool, milk, and meat. They were a key part of sacrificial offerings at the temple and tabernacle, and were frequently compared to men in the Bible, to illustrate their dependency and helplessness. Wool is shorn at the end of the summer. Domestic sheep can have twice the follicles as wild sheep and replenish wool more quickly. The sheep native to Israel is the fat-tailed Awassi, which is white with brown or black head and feet. The tails of these sheep can weigh as much as 33 pounds for females and 22 pounds for males. They are similar to the humps of the camel in that they store nutrients in the tail to sustain themselves in times of scarcity. This helps them to survive in the desert climate of the Negev, as does their high tolerance of heat and fast replacement of lost water. The so-called “mountain sheep” of the Bible was a subspecies of the Mouflon. They are extinct today. Pastor con su rebaño en el Negev.
