AFFIRMATIVE and NEGATIVE words are OPPOSITES AFFIRMATIVE WORDS are used to say that something DOES EXIST or DOES HAPPEN. NEGATIVE WORDS are used to say that something DOES NOT EXIST or DOES NOT HAPPEN.

AFFIRMATIVE & NEGATIVE words In Spanish to make a sentence negative, you usually put no in front of the verb. Ejemplos: No vamos a la clase de álgebra ahora. No quieren tomar apuntes en la clase.

AFFIRMATIVE & NEGATIVE words The negative words can also be used with the word "no," following the verb. Unlike English, double negatives are required in Spanish. Ejemplos: No estudiamos nunca el sábado por la noche. No comes nunca en la sala de clase.

DOUBLE NEGATIVES In English, we learn that a negative + negative = positive. Example: We would NEVER say in English... “I never (-) have no (-) homework.” (meaning you HAVE homework) In Spanish, you MUST use two negatives to make a negative statement. Yo no (-) estudio nunca (-).= I never ever study.

Examples of DOUBLE NEGATIVES No habla nadie. Nobody speaks. Él no come nunca. He never eats. Alfredo no baila tampoco . Alfredo does not dance either.

AFFIRMATIVE & NEGATIVE words Unlike English, Spanish does not normally mix negative and affirmative words in a sentence. English Maria does not need anything. NOT Maria does not need nothing. Spanish María no necesita nada. NOT María no necesita algo.

Affirmative and Negative words Alguno, alguna, algunos, algunas, and ninguno, ninguna, ningunos, ningunas match the number (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine) of the noun to which they refer. —¿Uds. van al laboratorio de computadoras en algunas clases? —No, no vamos al laboratorio en ninguna clase.
