Ser vs. Estar

Both ser and estar mean to be, but they have different uses.

Uses of Ser Uses of Ser – There are 5 uses for ser. The acronym TOCOP can be used to remember these.

Uses of Estar Uses of Estar – There are 2 for the verb estar.

Time/Date Ex. Hoy es martes (Today is Tuesday).

Time Ex. Son las cuatro de la tarde. (It is four o’clock in the afternoon)

Origin Ex. Nosotros somos de Springfield. (We are from Springfield.)

Origin Ex. Vosotros sois de España. (Y’all are from Spain)

Characteristic Ex. Shakira es rubia. (Shakira is blonde.)

Characteristic Ex. Yo soy muy atlético. (I am very athletic.)
