Objetivos del elearning Aumentar la cantidad y calidad de los materiales y recursos de aprendizaje y facilitar su acceso a los estudiantes. Incrementar las posibilidades de comunicación didáctica entre los profesores y los estudiantes y entre los propios estudiantes. Flexibilizar el horario de estudio con el fin de adaptarse a las necesidades y posibilidades de los estudiantes.

Clasificación de plataformas Se clasificación según la información que gestionan en CMS, LMS o LCMS: CMS (Content management system): Gestor de contenidos LMS (Learning Management System): Gestionar los alumnos y la formación desde un punto de vista administrativo: exámenes, matrículas, .... LCMS (Learning Content Management System): Permite a varios autores editar simultáneamente contenido contra un repositorio de Learning Objects, además de integrar la parte administrativa. En grandes organizaciones, utilizarían un LCMS para desarrollar y gestionar el contenido formativo, y un LMS como plataforma para integrar con un portal, intranet, etc.
