Los verbos reflexivos Apuntes de gramática

What are reflexive verbs? Reflexive verbs are used when people are doing things to or for themselves (i.e. combing one’s hair, brushing one’s teeth). We use reflexive pronouns with reflexive verbs to show that the action is being done to the sentence’s subject. Reflexive verbs are conjugated like any other verbs. The only difference is that we add a reflexive pronoun.

Reflexive Pronouns Here are the subject/reflexive pronoun pairs: Yo: Me Tú: Te Él/Ella/Ud.: Se Nosotros/as: Nos Vosotros/as: Os Ellos/Ellas/Uds.: Se

Ejemplo: Esconderse (To hide oneself) Yo me escondo I hide myself Nosotros/as nos escondemos We hide ourselves Tú te escondes You (familiar) hide yourself Vosotros os escondéis You all (familiar) hide yourselves Él/Ella/Ud. se esconde He/She hides himself/herself You (formal) hide yourself Ellos/Ellas/Uds. se esconden They hide themselves You all (formal) hide yourselves

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive Verbs Many verbs can be used with or without a reflexive pronoun. If there is no reflexive pronoun, the sentence’s subject is not receiving the action of the verb. Ejemplos: Yo me escondo. I hide myself. (I am doing AND receiving the action of the verb.) Yo escondo el libro. I hide the book. (I am doing the hiding, but the book is receiving the action.)

Reflexive Verbs and Verb Meanings Some verbs have different meanings when we add a reflexive pronoun Ejemplos: Dormir: To sleep Dormirse: To fall asleep Ir: To go Irse: To leave, to go away Poner: To put, to place Ponerse: To put on clothes
