Direct Object Pronouns ¡Así se dice! Capítulo 6 Direct Object Pronouns

Direct Object Pronouns In English the direct object receives the action of the verb in a sentence. The direct object can be a person, place, thing, idea. The direct object answers the questions who or what? The direct object usually comes after the verb in English.

Direct Object Pronouns Direct object pronouns take the place of the direct object in a sentence. This helps to avoid unnecassary repetition. For example:

Direct Object Pronouns Instead of saying, “I want the shirt,” you can say, “I want it.” The word “it” takes the place of the word “shirt.”

Direct Object Pronouns (English) us you all (info.) them; you all (formal) me you him, her, it

Direct Object Pronouns (Spanish) me (me) te (you) lo (him or it) la (her or it) nos (us) os (you all inf.) los (them, you all) las (them, you all)

Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns agree in gender and number with the direct object they replace.

Placement of Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed... directly before a conjugated verb Tengo la pluma = I have the pen. La tengo = I have it.

Placement of Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed... directly before a conjugated verb If the verb is negative, the DOP goes AFTER the no and BEFORE the verb. Isabel, tienes mi gorro? No, no lo tengo.

Placement of DOPs Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed... directly before a conjugated verb attached to the end of an infinitive Not all sentences have an infinitive. Only sentences with multiple verbs: i.e. Tener que + inf. Tener ganas de + inf. Pensar + inf. Querer + inf. Necesitar + inf.

Placement of DOPs Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed... directly before a conjugated verb attached to the end of an infinitive Juana tiene que llevar el sombrero. Juana tiene que llevarlo. O: Juana lo tiene que llevar.

Placement of Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed... directly before a conjugated verb attached to the end of an infinitive attached to the end of an affirmative command attached to the end of the present progressive.

Direct Object Pronouns When the pronoun replaces both a masculine and a feminine direct object noun, we use los. ¿Cuándo compras la camisa y el vestido? Los compro el sábado.

Direct Object Pronouns When writing a sentence with a DOP... Identify the Direct Object Noun receiving the action Decide which Direct Object Pronoun to use Must agree with gender/number with the direct object it replaces. Determine where to place the DOP Write the verb first! Then put in the DOP. It goes directly before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive (if there is one). Fill in the rest of the sentence.
