Would you rather? There are so many possibilities with this fun resource! Consider sharing how you use it in your own classroom, in the comments section on TpT. Option #1: Class building strategy: This activity is designed to help students come to feel comfortable and supported within the class. Students will get to move around the classroom, get to know other students better, and most importantly-- learn to value and appreciate different opinions within the classroom. Building a supportive class environment will encourage students to feel safe to share opinions and take risks in future classroom activities. I typically use this activity over several days, as a warm up or closure activity for about 10 minutes each time, so it lasts for several days. This is designed for intermediate and advanced Spanish classes to develop class community and review common vocabulary. Prep and Execution: Post the presentation on your overhead projector so it is clearly visible to the whole class. Go over the Rules slide, and ensure all students know what to do. Select a student “leader” to pose the first question (or to pose several questions) or you the teacher could pose the questions. The fun thing about picking a student to do this is it makes the whole activity completely student centered. Have your students get up (and move desks if necessary) so all students are standing in the middle of the classroom before the first question is posed. After each question, consider posing follow up questions about why students chose the side they did. Students might discuss in partners or share with the whole class. Option #2: Writing / Cultural Warm up: Post one of the prompts as a short journal or writing assignment – makes a great warm up or closure activity for about 10 minutes in class or could be a homework assignment. The idea is for students to think critically about the cultural ideas addressed. They might conduct some independent research at home about some of the issues, if so assigned. Prep and Execution: Post the desired prompt on your overhead projector so it is clearly visible to the whole class and have students copy the prompt. OR make a copy for each student or pairs of students to share. This could be a great independent writing assignment or partner activity. Rules The leader poses a question to the entire class, who all wait in the middle of the room. Think about your answer to the question. Then move to the side of the room that corresponds with your preference. After each question all students move back to the middle of the room. Some questions are very silly… others are more serious.
