When to use the imperfect… The imperfect is used to talk about situations in the past What things were like What was going on Las minifaldas eran populares. Los guantes tenían muchos detalles. Yo buscaba un cinturón.

When to use the preterite… The preterite is used to talk about an event that began or ended While something else was going on Interrupted something else Yo buscaba unas chancletas y fui a la tienda. Yo caminaba cuando vi un perro. Encontré unos pantalones pero eran apretados.

When to use the imperfect… The imperfect is also used to say what you were going to do IR + A + INFINITIVE The form of IR will ALWAYS be in the imperfect What comes after can be preterite or imperfect. I was going to do my homework, but I lost it. I was going to go to the park, but it was cold. Iba a hacer la tarea, pero la perdí. Iba a ir al parque, pero hacía frío.
