Transcripción de la presentación:

The Imperfect En esta presentación miramos otra manera de hablar del pasado. Se llama el imperfecto.

Remember… The Preterite and the Imperfect are used to talk about the past. The Preterite tense is used to speak about COMPLETED actions in the past. The Imperfect tense is used to…

Uses of the Imperfect to Talk About the Past To talk about something that used to happen “I used to read a story before bed” To speak about how old someone was “He was 30 years old when…” To speak about background events in a story “While I was walking through the forest…” To say what time it was / talk about the weather. “It was 8:30 pm / It was hot” To talk about past events that don’t have definite starting and ending points. “When he was a kid…”

Ejemplos… … actions that happen more than once in the past? I used to live in Peoria. Every Christmas the whole family would get together for a big dinner.

Más ejemplos… … actions that started in the past but didn’t finish (as far as we know): I was walking to work when I saw an accident. She was tired and hungry.

Uses of the imperfect in English Use the imperfect to express actions, conditions, and events that: were in progress at some time in the past (“was …ing”). occurred repeatedly in the past (“used to” or “would”). were anticipated or planned (“was going to”).

OK, what are the forms? Finally! The imperfect tense is probably the easiest form to learn because there are only three irregulars. There are two sets of endings… -AR: add –aba to the base (Flinstones endings) ER/IR: add –ía to the base

The Imperfect Tense of Irregular Verbs It is so simple you won’t believe it!!!

The Imperfect Tense Of Regular –ar Verbs Keep the stem of the infinitive and add the following endings: hablar yo hablaba nosotros/as hablábamos tú hablabas vosotros/as hablabais él/ella hablaba ellos/ellas hablaban Ud. Uds.

The Imperfect Tense Of Regular –er Verbs Keep the stem of the infinitive and add the following endings: comer yo comía nosotros/as comíamos tú comías vosotrosas comíais él/ella comía ellos/ellas comían Ud. Uds.

The Imperfect Tense Of Regular –ir Verbs Keep the stem of the infinitive and add the following endings: vivir yo vivía nosotros/as vivíamos tú vivías vosotros/as vivíais él/ella vivía ellos/ellas vivían Ud. Uds.

Some examples, please! hablar cantar hablaba cantaba hablabas cantabas hablábamos cantábamos Hablabais cantabais hablaban cantaban Don’t forget the accent on the nosotros form!

How about for –ER & -IR? comer vivir comía vivía comías vivías comíamos vivíamos comíais vivíais comían vivían Don’t forget the accent on the all the forms!

Let’s try a few forms! Estar: yo _________ tú _________ ella ________ nosotros _________ vosotros ellos __________

Estar… yo estaba tú estabas ella estaba nosotros estábamos vostros estabais ellos estaban How about volver?

Volver… yo volvía tú volvías ella volvía nosotros volvíamos vosotros volvíais ellos volvían Volver is a stem-changing verb in the present, but stem-changing verbs don’t change in the imperfect! How about conocer?

Conocer… yo conocía tú conocías ella conocía nosotros conocíamos vosotros conocíais ellos conocían Conocer is irregular in the present, but not in the imperfect! How about decir?

Decir… yo decía tú decías ella decía nosotros decíamos vosotros decíais ellos decían Decir is stem-changing and irregular in both the present and the preterite, but it’s regular in the imperfect! How about levantarse?

Levantarse… yo me levantaba tú te levantabas ella se levantaba nosotros nos levantábamos vosotros os levantabais ellos se levantaban Reflexive verbs work the same as in the present – don’t forget to put the reflexive pronoun in front of the verb! How about those three irregulars?

3 Verbos Irregulares en el Imperfecto Ser yo era tú eras él/ella/Ud. era nosotros éramos vosotros erais ellos/ellas eran Uds. Ir yo iba tú ibas él/ella/Ud. iba nosotros íbamos vosotros ibais ellos/ellas iban Uds.

3 Irregular Verbs in the Imperfect yo veía tú veías él/ella/Ud. veía nosotros veíamos vosotros veíais ellos/ellas veían Uds.

Ser, ir, ver ser ir ver era iba veía eras ibas veías era iba veía éramos íbamos veíamos erais ibais veíais eran iban veían That’s all, folks – no other irregular imperfect forms in Spanish.

Ejemplos… Cuando iba al colegio leía todos los días. To talk about something that used to happen… Cuando iba al colegio leía todos los días.

Ejemplos… To speak about background events: Mientras la directora hablaba, yo escuché música en mi ipod.

Ejemplos… To say what time it was and to talk about the weather: Eran las tres de la tarde y hacía un calor infernal.

A Practicar ¿Qué era lo que más te gustaba comer cuando eras pequeño? ¿Qué hacías mientras ibas en el bus (coche) al venir al colegio? ¿Cuál era el clima (tiempo) del sitio a donde fuiste de vacaciones el verano pasado? Escribe un pequeño párrafo contando algo que hacías con tus padres cuando eras pequeño.

A piece of cake! The forms are that simple! We’ll look at the differences between the two past forms – the preterite and the imperfect – in a later slide show.
