A ver Versus haber The phrase a ver and the verb haber have identical pronunciations in Spanish but are actually spelled differently and carry a different meaning. Even though a ver and haber are pronounced the same, we need to adequately distinguish the two homophones in writing. Knowing the uses of the phrase a ver and the verb haber will help you determine which one to write.

A ver: Part I The preposition a is used with the verb ver (to see): 1. In the structure ir + a + infinitive to express that someone is going to see (something) Vamos a ver una película en casa esta noche. 2. To mean let’s see A ver si terminas. Points 3-6 below are shades of this let’s see meaning, in literal and figurative senses. 3. To provoke interest or expectation A ver cuándo terminas.

A ver: Part II 4. To attract someone’s attention before requesting something from them A ver, ¿has hecho lo que te pedí? 5. To mean of course A ver, ¿cómo no lo voy a hacer? 6. In a question to solicit the verification of something ─Mira lo que te traje. ─¿A ver?

Haber Haber is a verb that has multiple functions in Spanish, and as a result, multiple meanings. It can be used: 1. As an impersonal verb: where haber means there is or there are. Hay veinte estudiantes en esta clase. Parece haber ciertos disturbios en la ciudad. 2. As an auxiliary verb in compound tenses: haber + participle. Ellos habían querido ir a la fiesta, pero luego descubrieron que tenían que trabajar. Tiene que haber estudiado mucho para sacar una nota tan alta. 3. As a noun: where haber means property, wealth, estate or fortune. Posee varias terrenos en su haber.
