Hace….que To express how long something has been going on, Spanish uses the following construction. HACE + length of time + verb (in the present tense) Examples: Hace dos años que estudio en VIU Hace cinco minutos que estoy en clase.

Tiempo Presente English uses the Present Perfect or Present perfect progressive tense to express the same idea. (An action in progress for a period of time that is still in progress at the time of the utterance) Examples: I have been studying at VIU for two years. I have been in class for ten minutes.

In Spanish, however, the same idea is expressed using only the simple present tense.
Los niños duermen hace una hora. Hace 150 años que Canadá es un país independiente.

Questions and Variations
To ask how much time has passed, you can say Hace cuánto?.... Or Hace cuánto tiempo? Hace cuánto tiempo que estás aquí? --Estoy aquí hace una hora. You can also express vague amounts of time using “hace”. “Hace mucho tiempo que la economía está mal”. Or “Hace poco que trabajo en este lugar”

You can also put the “hace” phrase before the subject and verb, or after. If it comes before you need to separate it with “que” Hace cinco años que estamos casados. O Estamos casados hace cinco años.
