El Presente Perfecto The Present Perfect Tense

Hoy: What’s the difference in meaning between “I have eaten sushi” and “I ate sushi?”

To express the idea that someone has done something, use the present perfect tense. In English, this looks like “ I have studied” or “he has written.”

Use HABER Present Perfect: formed like this: start with one of these forms of HABER: Yo he (I have [done something]) Hemos we have Has you have   Ha he/she/you (f) has Han they/all of you have

Then add the past participle: Past Participles of Regular Verbs Root Ending Meaning Tomar tom -ado Taken Comer com -ido Eaten Sufrir sufr Suffered

Past Participles ending in ído Caer Caído Creer Creído Leer Leído Oír Oído Reír Reído traer traído

Try these! We have studied. Hemos estudiado. 2.The boys have run. Los chicos han corrido. 3.My sister has eaten. Mi hermana ha comido. 4.Her friend has lived in Spain. Su amiga ha vivido en España. 5. Have you learned? ¿Has aprendido?

Verbs Irregular in the Past Participle Participle Form Meaning Abrir Abierto Opened Cubrir Cubierto Covered Decir Dicho Said Escribir Escrito Written Hacer Hecho Done Imprimir Impreso Printed Morir Returned Died Poner Puesto Put Resolver Resuelto Resolved, solved Romper Roto Broken Ver Visto Seen Volver Vuelto (Compounds of the above verbs, like descrubrir, deshacer, imponer, devolver are also irregular in the past participle)

Contesta en español: 17. ¿Han hecho ustedes la tarea? ________________________ 18. ¿Has aprendido el español? _____________________ 19. ¿Qué has comido hoy? ______________________________________

Verdades y Mentiras Yo nunca nunca….

Los participios como adjetivos Think about participles like “written,” “eaten,” “broken.” En español: Escrito comido roto Could you use these as adjectives? When would you describe something as written, eaten, or broken?

Los participios como adjetivos If you were to change something’s condition to “eaten,” “written,” “broken,” or “opened” (for examples) What verb would you use with these? ESTAR plus the participle that you are now using as an ADJECTIVE! Which means it has to agree in… GENDER and NUMBER!

Los participios como adjetivos Ejemplo: The pencils are broken= Los lápices están rotos. The door is open= La puerta está abierta. The essays are written= Los ensayos están escritos.

So. When do you make the participles agree in gender and number and when do you leave them be? When they are used with haber as part of a compound tense, leave them be. When they are used as adjectives (usually with estar) you change them.

Cerrar: In what sorts of situations would you use the present perfect instead of the preterite tense?
