Answer question: Why are we learning about el día de los muertos? El 2 de noviembre ESPAÑOL 1—ACC MIÉRCOLES El día de los muertos Per 1, 2, 3 Answer question: Why are we learning about el día de los muertos?   When you understand a culture’s perspectives (views and beliefs), you can better understand their literature, art, and way of life. People who appreciate and value their own culture and personal histories as well as the values and traditions of others are open-minded and that open-mindedness is the foundation upon which we can become a more accepting and peaceful world.

Show CGI Student Academy Award Gold Medal Winner Short Film HD: "Dia De Los Muertos" from Whoo Kazoo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCQnUuq-TEE

Using what you learned through the movie yesterday, what do you think is the purpose or message of this short film? We fear the unknown so we fear death. Losing someone is sad so death is associated with sadness. If you accept death as a natural part of the life cycle, it can be less scary. If you believe that there is an afterlife, you can come to terms with your sadness because you have hope that you will see your loved ones again. You can keep the spirt of your loved ones alive in your heart by remembering all the good times you shared and in this way they can be closer now than they were before.

Distribute handout for the movie on El Día de los Muertos (25 mins) that you watched yesterday. (Still need to finish going over the answers to the questions with per 3.)

Finish going over the questions with per 3 When is El día de los Muertos? How do Mexicans view death? How do they honor their dead relatives? Is el Día de los Muertos the same as out celebration of Halloween? What is “la ofrenda”? What are some of the items included in preparing “la ofrenda”? Where does the main celebration take place and what is done to prepare for it? It is actually 2 days; what is celebrated on each day? Are the costumes the same or different from the ones used in the USA on Halloween? Do you agree with the final message? We are not here for a long time; we are here for a good time. Why or why not?

Continue with the Venn Diagram Project. To get full credit: MUST have at least 20 characteristics (TOTAL for all 3 categories) Do NOT separate 1 category into several characteristics. For example: Items used to decorate the altar are all part of one category. Don’t count each ítem separately for the “20 minimum” requirement. The different foods are all part of one category. Don’t count each food separately. MUST include historical information. MUST be decorated. Write titles in Spanish but info as bullet points in English Halloween/Jalouín AMBOS (both) Día de los muertos Show students what the Pan de muertos looks like and share some with them.

REPASO (review) Traduce: We like (Name) and I like They like (Name & Name) like You guys like (Name) & you like A nosotros nos gusta… I like You like He/She likes (Name) likes You polite like A mí me gusta… A (name) y a mí nos gusta… A ti te gusta… A ellos / ellas les gusta… A él or ella le gusta… A (name) le gusta… A (N) y a (N) les gusta… A usted le gusta… A ustedes les gusta… A (N) y a ti les gusta…
