¿Qué hora es?

¿Qué hora es? What time is it? Es la una. Son las dos.
It’s one o’clock It’s two o’clock There are three (3) main forms of time: Analog Digital Alpha Military time is communicated in all three of the forms.

Analog: Analog time is communicated by means of the ‘old fashion’, round clock, with 12 numbers displayed, and three (3) ‘hands’. The ‘hands’ are the lines that come from the center of the clock. Each line serves a special purpose. The short hand determines the hour, the long hand determines the minutes, and the skinny hand determines the seconds. A typical analog clock looks like this:

*Digital: Digital time is communicated by means of numbers, in numeric form only. Digital time is displayed with a 2-digit space for the hour, 2-digit space for the minute, and some even display a 2-digit space for the seconds. These days, digital time is the most common form of displaying time. A typical digital clock looks like this: 10:20:05 *Alpha: Alpha time is communicated by means of letters from the alphabet, using words. There are no numbers in numeric form displayed. One needs to read the time in the form of words. Alpha time looks like this: * It is four o’clock. (English) * Son las cuatro. (Spanish)

*Military: Military time can be communicated in all three forms listed above. However, military time uses the full 24 hours of a day instead of 12 hours for AM, and 12 hours for PM. After twelve noon, the time does not revert back to :00pm, 01:00:00, or one o’clock pm. The times continues as 13, 13:00:00, and/or thirteen-hundred hours. This pattern continues till all 24 hours of the day have been completed. In the U.S.A, military time is not common is civilian life, but the military world uses this time exclusively. * Why do you need to learn this time in Spanish class? Good question! The rest of the world commonly uses military time in civilian life, especially in the transportation industry. It is common to find time schedules for boats, busses, planes, and trains listed in military time all throughout Europe and Latin America. In the hopes that students will one day travel to Europe and Latin America, to understand travel schedules is vital to an enjoyable and stress free experience.
