Los Adjetivos Posesivos 3.2

Posesión con DE Recuerden: En inglés, usamos el “ ___’s” para expresar la posesión… En espanol, “ ___’s” no existe…

Posesión con DE En vez de “ ___’s”, usamos la palabra DE… Laura’s mom is tall. La madre de Laura es alta.

You can show possession using “DE” in the following formula: el/la/los/las (noun) de (persona) + + + Sara’s dog el perro de Sara EX: Pablo’s cousin la prima de Pablo los padres de Esteban Eseban’s parents

Los Adjetivos Posesivos Para expresar posesión, también es posible usar un adjetivo posesivo… ¿Cuáles son unos adjetivos posesivos en inglés?

Below are the possessive adjectives in Spanish. mi (s) nuestro(a) (s) vuestro(a) (s) tu (s) su (s) su (s) Like all adjectives, possessive adjectives AGREE with the noun they modify.

mi (s) nuestro(a) (s) vuestro(a) (s) tu (s) su (s) su (s) NOTE: “nuestro” and “vuestro” must agree in NUMBER AND GENDER bc they have M/F forms!!!

¿Qué significan en inglés? mi(s) nuestro(a)(s) = my = our tu(s) = your (fam) = your (fam) vuestro(a)(s) su(s) = his/her your (form) su(s) = their, your (form)

In English, POSSESSVE ADJECTIVES do NOT change to agree with the noun they modify: My mother is nice. My brother is nice. My cousins are nice.

In Spanish, adjectives must agree in NUMBER with the noun they modify (nuestro/vuestro must agree in GENDER as well!) Mi hermano es simpático. Mis primos son simpáticos.

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES always come BEFORE the nouns they modify: PLACEMENT POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES always come BEFORE the nouns they modify: ¿Está tu novio aquí? Is your boyfriend here? No, mi novio está en la biblioteca. No, my boyfriend is in the library.

tu casa su casa su casa vuestra casa ALL THE “YOU’s” YOUR HOUSE (fam, pl) tu casa (fam, sing) YOUR HOUSE su casa (for, sing) su casa (for, pl)

Your house Your house Your house Your house Another way to look at it… Your house Your house tu casa vuestra casa Your house su casa Your house su casa

HOW THEY WORK: First, determine WHO is possessing something, and that will tell you which possessive adjective to use… Ex: Mrs. Callahan’s students. Who possesses something? Mrs. C. (her)

MI/ MIS TU/ TUS SU/ SUS SINGULAR NUESTRO/A/OS/AS VUESTRO/A/OS/AS If Mrs. C possesses something, we know then that we would use the 3rd person singular group of possessive adjectives. SINGULAR MI/ MIS TU/ TUS SU/ SUS PLURAL NUESTRO/A/OS/AS VUESTRO/A/OS/AS SU/SUS

Son sus estudiantes. Because Mrs. Callahan is the one who is doing the possessing, we know we must use su or sus…(3rd person sing.) We must use the PLURAL form (SUS) because what is being possessed (the students) is plural and the possessive adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun that it describes (WHAT IS BEING POSSESSED) …NOT with WHO possesses it.

Fill in the blanks with the correct POSSESSIVE ADEJECTIVES: su 1. _______________ abuelos (his) 2. _______________ hermana (my) 3. _______________ primos (their) 4. _______________ madre (your, fam/sing) 5. _______________ padre (our) 6. _______________ tías (your, fam/plural) mi sus tu nuestro vuestras
