Formation: Rules Take the yo form of the verb in the present tense Drop the “-o” Switch the endings If it’s a stem-changer, the change occurs  *-ir stem changers: The change occurs in all forms  *-er/-ar stem changers: The change only occurs in the “shoe” and the nosotros form takes the original vowel. Beware of any other spelling changing verbs!  -car/-gar/-zar; g to j; and/or gu to g Don’t forget DISHES -ar -er/-ir -e -emos-a -amos -es-as -e -en-a -an

Hopes and Wishes Besides using the subjunctive with Impersonal Expressions (Es bueno que…), it can also be used to express a hope or a wish (such as when you want someone to do something)  El señor Zavala quiere que Isabel tome el ascensor. Mr. Zavala wants Isabel to take the elevator.  El señor Zavala sugiere que Isabel visite el Prado. Mr. Zavala suggests that Isabel visit the Prado. Pero… ¿cómo se forma una oración en el subjuntivo?

Subjunctive Sentence Formation Yo insisto en que ustedes hagan su tarea. Tú quieres que yo no les dé una prueba de vocabulario. Juan prefiere que su mamá cocine bistec con papas. Marisa y yo necesitamos que nuestros hermanos pasen la aspiradora. Susana y Luisa esperan que sus padres las dejen salir con sus amigas este viernes. Yo deseo que Miguel me llame. Ud. sugiere que ellos coman saludablemente. ¡Ojalá que ya no llueva! Subject #1 + verb in p. indicative (trigger) + QUE + Subject #2 + verb in p. subjunctive TWO subjects MUST be present for the sentence to use the subjunctive!

We prefer that you guys visit us on Sunday.  Preferimos que nos visiten el domingo. I need you to lend me your Spanish book.  Necesito que me prestes tu libro de español. Paco desires that Lola calls him.  Paco desea que Lola le llame. Hopefully, we’ll go to the movies this weekend.  Ojalá que vayamos al cine este fin de semana. I hope to see my friends over spring break.  Espero ver a mis amigos durante las vacaciones de primavera. **
