Transcripción de la presentación:

Ser vs. Estar To be… or … To be???

First, conjugate the verb“SER”.

Ser – to be Yo soy Tú eres Él es Ella es Ud. Es Nosotros (as) somos Vosotros (as) sois Ellos son Ellas son Uds. son

Now conjugate the verb “estar”.

Estar – to be Yo estoy Tú estás Él está Ella está Ud. está Nosotros (as) estamos Vosotros (as) estáis Ellos están Ellas están Uds. están

If both verbs mean to be, then how do we know when to use ser and when to use estar???

Associate Ser with permanent and estar with temporary Just keep in mind……this isn’t always the case, but for the most part it’s a pretty good rule to follow.

MOOODPIT (E) and FLETCHA

SER - MOOODPIT M: material – when something is made of a material. Mi camisa es de seda. My shirt is silk. O: origin – used with “de”. Soy de Nueva York. I am from NY. O: occupation – Soy maestra. I am a teacher. Uds. son estudiantes. You are students. O: Opinion – Yo creo que el Señor Blankenship es un buen director. D: Description – Yo soy alta y sociable. P: Possession – El libro es de Paco. I: Identification – Elizabeth es la hermana de mi amigo. T: Time, Day, Date Son las ocho – It is 8:00 Hoy es lunes – today is Monday. Hoy es el 10 de septiembre – Today is September 10 th.

ESTAR - FLETCHA Remember that Estar is associated with temporary! F: Feelings - ¿Cómo estás? How are you? L: Location – Estoy en la clase de español. E: Emotion – Tú estás triste. T / C – Temporary Conditions La sopa está caliente. The soup is hot. H: Health – Yo estoy enferma. I am sick. A: Action in Progress – Estamos comiendo. These are part of the present progressive tense. Estar (conjugated) + present participle Present participle – If -ar verb add -ando If -er or -ir verb add -iendo. If double vowel add yendo (leyendo)

Although you use estar when you are talking about a location, you need to use ser when you are talking about the location of an event(the event can’t move and it’s permanent).

This is confusing but it doesn’t have to be….. (E) EVENT – location of an event El partido es en el estadio. The game is at the stadium. La fiesta es en la casa de mi novio. The party is at my boyfriend’s house.

Events Una fiesta Un concierto Un partido Un evento Una cena Un baile
