Las clases de Sra. Schwarz Realidades 1

Sra. Schwarz  In Spanish, apostrophes (’) do not exist.  For example, you cannot say “Jorge’s perro,” “María’s libro,” or “Raúl’s casa.”  Use de + noun to show possession in Spanish.  Por ejemplo: Jorge’s dog = the dog of Jorge  el perro de Jorge María’s book = the book of María  el libro de María Raúl’s house = the house of Raúl  la casa de Raúl

Sra. Schwarz Más ejemplos:  Tengo el cuaderno de Felipe. I have Felipe’s notebook.  La hermana de María es amable. Maria’s sister is friendly.  El amigo de Jorge es sociable. Jorge’s friend is sociable.  ¿Dónde está el lápiz de Marisa? Where is Marisa’s pencil?

Sra. Schwarz  In Spanish, using de + noun is one way to show possession.  Possessive adjectives are another way to show possession in Spanish.  You can use possessive adjectives to tell what belongs to someone or to show relationships.  The possessive adjectives in English are my, your, his, her, its, your, and their.

Sra. Schwarz  You use possessive adjectives in English like this:  my dog  your house  his notebook  her pencil  Now, let’s look at possessive adjectives in Spanish!

singularplural mi mis my tu tus your (informal) su sus his, her, its, your (formal) nuestro(s) nuestra(s) our vuestro(s) vuestra(s) your (informal) su sus their, your (formal & informal)

Sra. Schwarz  Notice that Spanish possessive adjectives agree in number (singular or plural) with the nouns they describe.  In addition to number, the possessive adjectives nuestro and vuestro also agree in gender (masculine or feminine) with the nouns they describe.  Let’s see some examples:

singularplural mi hermano mis hermanos my brother(s) tu tía tus tías your aunt(s) su hijo sus hijos his, her, its your (formal) son(s) nuestro(s) primo(s) nuestra(s) prima(s) our cousin(s) vuestro(s) hermanastro(s) vuestra(s) hermanastra(s) your (informal) stepbrother(s) / stepsister(s) su abuelo sus abuelos their your (formal & informal) grandfather(s) / grandparents

Sra. Schwarz  Notice that su and sus can have many different meanings: his, her, its, your, or their.  To be more specific, you can use de + noun or de + pronoun.  Por ejemplo: sus flores = las flores de ella sus regalos = los regalos de Javier y Carlos su globo = el globo de él

Sra. Schwarz  Remember that possessive adjectives must be singular or plural depending on the noun.  With nuestro(a)(os)(as) and vuestro(a)(os)(as), you must also look at gender (masculine or feminine).  Here are some more examples:

Sra. Schwarz  Mi prima es alta.  Todas mis primas son altas.  Sus hermanos Felipe y José son rubios.  Nuestros abuelos tienen una casa en Carolina del Norte.  Vuestra tía es divertida.  Sr. López, ¿su gato es famoso?  Tu cumpleaños es el viernes, ¿no?
