What is an object pronoun? An object pronoun is a word that replaces a noun.

Why do you use object prouns? Object pronouns replace the object with smaller words so you don’t have to repeat them over and over again. Example: Did you buy the dress? Yes, I bought the dress. How much did the dress cost? The dress cost 40 dollars.

It’s much more natural to say… Did you buy the dress? Yes, I bought it. How much did it cost? It cost 40 dollars.

What are the object pronouns? In English the object pronouns are me you him her it us you them

Are there different kinds of object pronouns? Direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns

Direct object pronouns

What is a direct object? A direct object is a thing or a person that receives the direct action of a verb.

How can you tell if it’s a direct object? You ask or to the verb.

EXAMPLE The woman buys WHAT? a dress The woman buys the dress. VERB (buys)

The dress answers the question So dress is the direct object.

Now that you know the dress is the direct object you can replace the word dress with a direct object pronoun.

So what is a direct object pronoun? It is the WORD for the thing or the person that replaces the direct object.

For the noun the dress the direct object pronoun is it.

In Spanish you also use direct object pronouns to replace the noun that answers the questions WHO or WHAT to the verb.

In Spanish the Direct Object Pronouns are… me te lo la lo/la nos os los/las Notice that these refer to PEOPLE ONLY

EXAMPLE VERBO Let’s take the same sample sentence. La mujer compra el vestido.

EXAMPLE La mujer compra el vestido.

EXAMPLE The word vestido is the direct object that will be replaced with the direct object pronoun that matches it. La mujer compra el vestido.

With the personal a use  a after the verb or  al (a + el = al) after the verb.

EXAMPLE You must use the personal a in front of EACH person, pet or personified object in a sentence. Ella compra la ropa al hijo y a la hija.

EXAMPLE with people El dependiente ayuda a la niña. El dependiente ayuda al niño.

EXAMPLE with pets La mujer camina al perro. El hombre ayuda a su tortuga.

EXAMPLE of personification El chico ama a su patria. ¡Mira a sus ojos de enamorado!

EXAMPLES with ¿Quién? ¿A quién da flores? ¿A quiénes llevan a la tienda?

EXAMPLES with pronouns No conozco a nadie en la tienda. ¿Conoces a alguién que venda joyas baratas?

When don’t you  Generally NOT after TENER. use the personal a ? Ella tiene un hijo enfermo.  NOT after HAY. Hay dos dependientes en esa tienda.  NOT after SER. Es mi hijo.

When don’t you  NOT after BUSCAR. use the personal a ?  NOT after NECESITAR. Ella busca una dependiente buena. Yo necesito un dependiente. Notice that with the verbs NECESITAR and BUSCAR the PERSON could have been ANYONE. You DON’T use the personal a with a person that may or may not exist.

Add the personal a when it is needed. 1. El hombre paga_____el dependiente. El hombre paga al dependiente. 2. La mujer mira_____la falda. La mujer mira la falda. 3. Los clientes dan _____el dinero. Los clientes dan el dinero.

What are double object pronouns? Double object pronouns are when you have BOTH a direct object and an indirect object in the same sentence.
