Kindergarten Corner What We’re Learning… Reading: Your child will continue working in small groups to practice letter/sound recognition, sight word recognition, and reading strategies. Classes will also learn to visualize while reading. We will develop vocabulary by listening to stories read aloud while using words to describe and name people, places, and things. Students will visualize as they discuss story characters, settings, and events. (SOL K.1b, K.2c, K.8b, K.9g) Writing: Your child will continue learning how to stretch out beginning, middle, and ending sounds to write words in their stories along with writing sight words in a snap. Classes will complete a folk tale unit where we will read various stories, such as “The Three Little Pigs,” and learn about the common literary elements found in them. Classes will even write and illustrate their very own folk tales! (SOL K.12 a, c, d) Math: Classes will begin recognizing numbers as we match, count sets, write numbers, compare numbers, and identify missing numbers. We will continue rote counting to 100, counting by 5s and 10s to 100, and backwards from 10. At the end of January, students will begin learning fractions of a region (whole, equal parts/fair shares, 1/2, and 1/4). (SOL K.1; K.2b,c; K.4a-c; K.5). Science/Social Studies: Students will observe the seasonal changes of winter along with preparations of both humans and animals, such as hibernation and migration. Your child will also learn to identify Martin Luther King, Jr. and the events that honor him as we celebrate his birthday this month. Classes will also begin understanding how shadows occur when light is blocked by an object. We can’t wait to predict whether we think the groundhog will see his shadow at the end of the month!
